Facebook Pushes New Updates to Facebook iPhone and Android Apps

facebook-small-logoAmong a heap of announcements to the Facebook’s push for making mobile more social, comes the latest updates to the Facebook for iPhone and Android mobile apps! The Facebook app for Android is brought up to par with Facebook’s mobile capabilities. The iPhone features a new update design in the Newsfeed, Groups support, and some nice updates to Facebook Places

IMG_2111The iPhone app features a redesigned way of posting from inside of the Newsfeed View (image below). You’ll now see 3 main icons for updating:

  • Photo
  • Status
  • Check-in

Not much has changed in the way of functionality. However, you will find the new Groups feature to both mobile apps. With Groups, you can share pictures and posts with a small group of friends instead of sending things to your entire Facebook address book.

Facebook Places and Deals

Easier tagging and the option to upload pictures after checking in to Facebook Places is here. Facebook Deals are coming soon and will initially be available to US Facebook users only. Current participating retailers include:

  • American Eagle Outfitters ( my favorite)
  • Gap
  • Chipotle
  • H&M
  • JcPenney
  • McDonald’s
  • Macy’s
  • Starbucks
  • University of California at Berkeley

Facebook for Android updates brings the Android app up to par with Facebook’s mobile capabilities with these new additions, alongside a refresh of the notifications area of the Android app.

The Little Things That Count

All in all, the updates are small things for iPhone users, but should have big results in pushing frequent use of Places and Groups across both Android and iOS mobile platforms. Have you caught these updates? What do you think?
