In 2016, Instagram decided to let algorithms control your feed in order to show you the moments they believed you would care about the most. Since then, everyone has been wishing Instagram would stop meddling with algorithms and bring (chronological) order back to their feeds. That won’t happen anytime soon, but Instagram has created a compromise to this headache for users.
“Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in feed. With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about. So if your best friend shares a selfie from her vacation in Australia, it will be waiting for you when you wake up.”
Prioritizing Newer Posts
Instagram is making changes to your feed to give more priority to newer posts. If you have the latest Instagram update (v.39 on iOS, v.40 on Android), posts made within the last hour or two may appear at the top of your feed. They’re not in chronological order. However, the priority given to newer posts increases your chances of seeing them before they’re lost in Instagram’s algorithms.
A simple “show in chronological order” button is a better way to give feed control back to Instagram users. Until that day comes, this is the best Instagram will do.
